Moreover, it is the biggest show of the East Mediterranean and Eurasian regions. This year is the 23rd time it opens its doors and will attract over 54,000 travel professionals and tourists from different regions of the world and Turkey. All looking for new and exciting travel opportunities from destinations and travel service companies from around the world. The event annually attracts over 54,000 industry professionals and tourists looking for new and exciting travel opportunities from destinations and travel service companies from across the globe. The participation to the exhibition, which will be held with the support of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, T.R. Istanbul Governorship, Metropolitan Municipality of İstanbul as well as the corporate sponsorship of Turkish Airlines along with the support of KOSGEB (Small and Medium Industry Development Organization) and business partnership of the Turkish Hoteliers Federation and Turkish Tourism Investors Association, from all over the world continues rapidly.

“According to the data recently announced by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, Russia, Germany, Iran, Georgia, and Bulgaria are the top 5 countries among tourist-sending countries of Turkey. The number of foreign tourists visiting Turkey increased by 24.9 percent in the first 7 months of 2018 and reached up to 21.64 million people. According to TÜIK (Turkish Statistical Institute) data, Turkey’s tourism revenue rose 30.6 percent in the first half of 2018 and increased to 11.47 billion dollars from 8.78 billion dollars. This data shows that the tourism industry in Turkey becomes more powerful every day. We become more hopeful when we see these results.” According to the data received from the Ministry of Tourism and Culture, the increases in the June-September period exceeded 40 percent, and the increase was mostly because of the tourists coming from Germany and Russia, Aydın added.

The show is a valuable business platform providing new business and cooperation opportunities to the Turkish and global travel sectors.

“EMITT has been playing an important role in creating a 100-billion-dollar tourism market in Turkey. Last year, 28.5 million tourists visited Turkey. We believe Turkey will attain its goal of hosting 30 million tourists this year thanks to EMITT which creates many opportunities for both inbound and outbound tourism. Major tour operators who participated in the exhibition are of the opinion that the Turkey market has great potential for outbound tourism especially to Dubai and this trend will increase in the coming months for both leisure and business,” as concluded by El Hayek. The event began with the opening ceremony’s high-profile speakers attracting a large crowd. Insights on where the tourism industry is heading were shared by big names such as Turkish Minister of Tourism and Culture Prof. Dr. NumanKurtulmuş, former UNWTO head Taleb Rifai, Mayor of Istanbul MevlütUysal and Governor VasipŞahin, President of the Turkish Tourism Investors Association OyaNarin, President of TUROFED Osman Ayık, and President of the Federal Association of Germany’s Tourism Sector Michael Frenzel among others.

With the exhibition participation support provided by the Thrace Agency, Thrace hotels and agencies took part in the East Mediterranean International Tourism and Travel Exhibition. Participating in the exhibition in a separate booth in the 5th hall, Thracian tour operators and hotels had the opportunity to have one-on-one business meetings and form business connections with domestic and international tour operators, agencies and hotels. Making a statement about the participation in the EMITT Exhibition, Thrace Development Agency Secretary-General MahmutŞahin expressed the following: "Making progress in recent years, the nation's tourism is advancing towards the 50 million tourists and 50 billion USD target. Despite the occasional road accidents, the domestic and international tourism market has demonstrated considerable growth. And we, as Thrace aim to have a larger share of this market. Our agency has been participating in EMITT with a concept that is highlighting our professionals for three years. In recent years, we have been representing all of Thrace in the city’s booth. This year we have also taken our place with tour operators and hotels active in Thrace in the 5th hall. This year, the city of Edirne requested to participate in a separate booth of their own, and we responded positively, giving them a separate booth and position. The cities of Tekirdağ and Kırklareli carried out their promotions together. We invited all our tourism operation licensed hotels and all our tour operations and agencies in Thrace to the EMITT Exhibition. Our aim was to create a platform that enabled representatives of the sector to form business ties. We attended the exhibition with 12 hotels and tour companies that responded to our invitation. We had great results from the one-on-one business meetings our firms were able to carry out and I believe we were able to contribute to the promotion of our region on a domestic and international scale."

Tourism professionals from all over the world meet in EMITT

Pointing out that EMITT is one of the biggest meeting points for the tourism industry of not only Turkey but also the whole world, Aydın said, “Although the exhibition will open its doors more than four months from now, we managed to increase the number of exhibitors by 45% compared to last year. Besides, Indonesia, Malta, Austria, and Thailand will participate as exhibitors for the first time this year. We continue our tradition of bringing together the tourism sector representatives and tourism professionals from all over the world this year. In this context, we are organizing the Hosted Buyer (invited tour operator) Programme. Within the scope of the program, we will host nearly 900 tour operators from more than 100 countries. In January 2018, we broke a world record with more than 7,000 approved appointments. We aim to top this number with our program, which leads to new investments and new partnerships. Companies from Asia, Europe, the Far East, and Latin America show great interest in EMITT and apply to our program.”

EMITT, which will be open for visitors between January 31 - February 3, 2019, will host tourism professionals on its first two days and the travelers on the third and fourth days. Holiday consumers will have the chance to check out their preferred holiday destinations and choose from holiday options that suit their budgets with tempting prices and “early booking” campaigns. EMITT is the largest travel and tourism exhibition in Turkey. The event is supported by the Turkish Republic’s Culture and Tourism Department in partnership with Turkey Hoteliers Federation and Tourism Investment Association. Participants include Turkey’s prominent travel agencies, tour operators, winter and outdoor tourism destinations, hotels, tourism centers, and agencies as well as a wide range of vacation destinations.

At the EMITT exhibition, attended by 64.350 tourism professionals and 77.550 visitors hailing from 71 countries for a total of 142.100 people, all of Turkey’s eminent travel agencies, tour operators, hotels, plus over 200 cities and hundreds of participants from 71 countries prepared for the next season. The EMITT Exhibition, open to tourism professionals during the first two days and open to the public during the last two, is the only exhibition in the region that, despite the economic crisis, increased 10% compared to the prior year. EMITT’s continual and pleasing growth over the past 5 years encouraged the management of the exhibition space, and TUYAP has already finished constructing 3 large new halls. Now EMITT would be using those 3 new halls in addition to the others during the next EMITT exhibition. So, the total number of halls would be 12 this year.

According to independent research, over 90% of participants were satisfied with the event; exhibitors were pleased with the level of visitor interest shown in their services, whilst visitors were impressed by the variety of companies at the exhibition and the promotional activities that had been arranged to attract their attention, such as prize draws, traditional food tasting, music and dancing, elaborate local costumes and craft demonstrations. The event’s website says 71 countries are expected to participate with exhibitors in fields ranging from travel agencies to medical tourism. The company expects over 25,000 visitors to attend the EMITT fair in Istanbul.

EMITT exhibition organization has always played a leading role in the promotion of Turkey and increasing the recognition of Turkish tourism. We observe that the progress of the tourism industry in Turkey goes hand in hand with the EMITT organization’s progress in years in terms of growth since the exhibition has been actively held in our country, which was not ranked among the top 20 countries in the field of tourism in the past. I would like to share with you that in 2015 when EMITT was among the world’s six largest exhibitions, Turkish tourism had risen to 6th in the countries with the largest number of international tourist rankings. We will continue to bring together the tourism industry representatives with tourism professionals from all over the world in order to increase the number of international tourists and the brand value of our country by moving the bar higher every year.

What is your global strategy to gain more attention for the year 2019 in Turkey market and how will EMITT contribute to it?

Turkey’s global strategy is to promote Turkey is to the world’s largest and alternative markets. Especially Turkish Airlines, which is one of the world’s largest airlines, directs the flow of tourists to Turkey in a very efficient manner. As a result, when THY launches a new airline route to a new country, an opportunity arises for new countries to attend EMITT. Therefore, there is a great parallel correlation between the growth of the tourism industry and EMITT. In addition to the existing main markets, we invite over 600 hosted buyers from alternative markets. Our system that brings together the Turkish tourism professionals with Hosted Buyers increases the efficiency of the meetings, and as a result, the number of tourists and EMITT exhibitors increase.

Who is preparing the EMITT program and strategy?

Thanks to the successful and very popular organizations that have been hosted by EMITT up till today, EMITT has now become the tourism exhibition of Turkey rather than being a special exhibition event. The partners and supporters of the exhibition that take part in the creation of the program and strategy every year include the EMITT Committee, T.R. Ministry of Culture and Tourism, İstanbul Metropolitan Municipality (İBB), Istanbul Governorship, The Turkish Hoteliers Federation (TUROFED), The Turkish Tourism Investors Association (TTYD), and Turkish Airlines (THY).

What is your formula for success?

EMITT greatly contributes us in terms of maintaining close relationships with EMITT participants, keeping the track of new opportunities, following the tourism trends in the world, coming up with new ideas, and holding a successful organization. To be aware of what is going on in the world and Turkey and to create an alternative strategy before a possible economic and political problem emerges help us a lot. We have a very experienced team and we maintain very close relations with the members and the agencies of the industry since the exhibition first opened. We always see the representatives of the industry as part of EMITT and we say them that, rather than a special event, EMITT is a compilation of exhibitions of Turkey. Success follows when we make them think about what more can be done in order for preparing a larger and fruitful event for Turkey to increase the number of -arriving-departing- international tourists.
